Dec. 2007: Winding Down
Another year has passed and when I look at our annual sales figures, it becomes apparent that Kopsis, Inc. can no longer sustain itself. This isn't a surprise -- after all, we haven't released a new product or even an update in several years. If anything, it's a bit surprising that things have lasted this long. So, effective immediately, we are discontinuing sales of all products and will begin the process of shutting down the business. This website will remain active for a while hosting our product FAQs and some historically interesting information, but active support of our products will effectively cease.
Running Kopsis, Inc. has been a fun and interesting experience. I will always have fond memories of the FlashAdapter and of all of our customers that supported us in those early days. I never imagined that what started as a clever hack to trick the Handspring Visor into accepting CompactFlash cards would lead to a viable business. Subsequent Kopsis products never really excited people the same way, though Streamliner was critically acclaimed and I think most users appreciated our unique vision of how a handheld outliner should work.
I have learned much along the way, but the most important lesson is that running a small business just isn't what I was meant to do. As an engineer and inventor I find that I am much happier letting other people create the environment that can incubate my ideas. Several years ago I went back to working full-time as an engineer and could not be happier. I vowed to keep Kopsis running in my spare time for as long as our products remained relevant, but it seems that time is now passed. The mobile computing landscape has changed radically over the last several years. The future promises new devices and new paradigms that I couldn't have even imagined back when getting a 64 megabyte memory card into a PDA seemed like a huge technological achievement. Mobile computing will continue to be a hobby of mine for years to come, but my career lies on a different (and even more exciting) path.
Many thanks to our customers who have supported and encouraged us over the years. The pace of technology makes products almost evanescent, if our products have been able to enrich the lives of our customers for even a short time, then Kopsis has been a success. Best wishes to all of our customers and supporters.
